Fishing is fun for the whole family and for all abilities! We'll show you how to set up a simple bobber rig, bait your hook, and give you some tips on casting. We'll provide the bait and rigging supplies; you just need to catch the fish! We have fishing poles you can borrow, but if you have your own bring it along. Anglers of all abilities are welcome. Discover the joys and benefits of gardening! Drop by the Discovery Center to ask questions about gardening and get your Gardening Info Pack about invasive and native plants, pollinators, and gardening for wildlife. Included will be a take-home activity for kids. Please register for this FREE program so that we can prepare enough Gardening Info Packs (one per family). Sorry, but we won’t be able to distribute info packs to anyone that hasn’t registered. Registration required (please register one person per household).

Want to watch wildlife or just enjoy a peaceful paddle? Then join us for a leisurely kayak tour of Little Seneca Lake. We could see beaver, herons, maybe even a bald eagle. We'll supply boats, paddles, and PFD's, but you can bring your own PFD (Type III or V) if you have one. And don’t forget to bring water, sunscreen, and extra shoes to change into after. You can expect to get your feet wet and your clothes a bit damp. Basic paddling experience is necessary (this is not a lesson). The native plant sale by the Friends of Black Hill Nature Programs (FOBH) is returning to in-person shopping this spring! Most of the plants are grown by our volunteer gardeners with all proceeds of the sale supporting Black Hill Discovery Center and Seed Classroom. The sale will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5 at the Black Hill Discovery Center Parking Lot. Members get to shop early! Girls belong in nature, enjoying outdoor adventures! Join us for a girl-centered Nature Girls Club. There are three in-person sessions with a Park Naturalist that will focus on exploring nature, trying out outdoor skills, and nature journaling. Meetings are monthly. Registration required.

Toddlers of all abilities are invited to explore the exciting natural world in and around the Discovery Center. Families will explore at their own pace using nature play prompts that will remain out for the duration of the program. All ages are welcome but prompts and materials are geared towards children aged one to three. Registration required.

Gardening has been proven to improve physical health, mental wellness, and cognitive ability! Join us for this 5-session series to learn how to grow native plants, herbs, or vegetables. This program is designed to support aspiring gardeners with disabilities. We will supply guidance and all materials, including accessible garden beds, worktables, and ergonomic garden tools. At the end of our program, you will have acquired the skills, and plants, to take home and continue your garden adventures. Participants will be asked to complete a Modification Intake Form upon registration to ensure appropriate support from Program Access. Registration required.

Do you dream of building forts in the woods, or climbing a tree? Maybe you want to learn about woodland critters or create some art in the woods. Join us for a time to explore the woods how you want to. We’ll supply some materials and a space to create and explore, you supply the imagination and sense of adventure! Kayaking is even more fun that it looks! Come learn how to paddle on flat water in recreational solo kayaks on Little Seneca Lake. Learn basic strokes, entries and exits, boat control, and more, taught by certified American Canoe Association instructors. We won't roll, but you'll get wet, so dress accordingly. All necessary equipment provided but if you have your own PFD (Type III or V), you can bring it along. Please wear a hat, water sandals or shoes (no flip-flops, please) and bring water and sunscreen. Expect to get your feet wet and your clothes a bit damp. You must be able to swim. Meet in front of the gazebo by the pontoon boat dock and boat rental area. Registration required.

It's a week of water-filled fun! Plan to get wet (and muddy) as we explore our bit of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. We'll investigate fresh and saltwater habitats through hands-on experiences like sampling for water-dwelling animals and performing simple water tests. We’ll take daily trips to local creeks and streams and a Friday field trip to the Chesapeake Bay. We'll also spend time boating and fishing as we learn all about water, the plants and animals that live there, and how to better care for our watershed. Please note that the last day of camp meets 8 am to 3:30 pm. FOBH $295

Spend camp days trekking the forests and hills in search of grand adventures and meet with professional nature girls who work and play outside. Each day will, no doubt, be an epic escapade with a great team of campers. Please note there will be one extended day of camp so that we can go on a longer trip. Climb a tree, play in the creek, build a campfire, go boating, and then maybe do some fishing...it’s time to enjoy some outdoor adventure together! Campers will join a park naturalist to try out different adventures all around the park. We will send an interest checklist ahead of time to see what you would like to try and then each day we will search out an adventure depending on our interests. This will be a very active camp, full of dirty, muddy, and nature-y fun! FOBH $295

Let’s go outside and hike to improve fitness, play in nature, and experience the great outdoors as a family. You will meet a naturalist at the meet up spot and set out on a trail that will have nature play and fun learning prompts along the way. These hikes are designed for adults with young children. Most trails are not stroller accessible, so you’ll need a backpack or carrier for younger kids and non-walkers. Please register everyone attending no later than 24 hours before the hike so we can contact you with the hike's location and other important information.

We believe children belong outside and that they learn best by playing and experiencing the world around them. This program is a 24 session (no class on March 26 and 28), drop-off, preschool program designed to foster your child’s creativity, sense of self, and love of the outdoors. Classes will be outdoors with a park pavilion as our base. Children must be potty-trained by the start of the program and bring their own snacks with them. A welcome letter with more information will be sent once you register.

Come join us for a woodland adventure full of adventurous play, nature lessons, and wild skills. Each month we'll explore what nature has to show us and spend some time learning new wild skills. We will also have time, space, and materials for unstructured play in the woods around our campfire circle. Students will be able to self-select what they would like to focus on from the activities provided. We will meet at the campfire area by Shelter F on Parking Lot 3, in Black Hill Regional Park. Travel by van to a unique 35-acre pleasure garden near Philadelphia, featuring courtyards of tropical, perennial, and container plantings, water gardens, fountains, and ponds. Also featured are vegetable and woodland gardens, as well as The Ruin garden, among others. We will walk on trails of various surfaces, some being uneven and hilly. Bring a bagged lunch, water, comfortable shoes, binoculars, and sunscreen. Also bring money for quick supper stop on the way home. FOBH $58

Do you love being outside and want to learn some leadership skills? Then join us to take your camp experience to the next level. Spend quality time with Park Naturalists learning how to create and implement quality programs for kids at summer camp. In between working on leadership, communication, group dynamics and creative skills, you will also spend time going on adventures to explore careers in parks. This course will include first aid and CPR training as well. This is a 10-day camp with the first week being a training week and the second week being a chance to work directly with a camp. The listed dates are for the required training week. After registration we will contact you to work out a second week to practice your skills with real campers. FOBH $295

Join us for our first action and service camp! Campers can earn service hours while making friends, learning new skills, all while having fun. We’ll kayak around the lakeshore picking up trash as we go, brainstorm ideas and make improvements to our Nature Play Spaces, and work on other projects in Parks. Campers will also meet park staff from Pope Farm, Community Gardens, and other park units, learning about their jobs, and how they are working to improve Parks and our local environment. This is an awesome opportunity to give back to your community while having fun and practicing your stewardship skills. FOBH $295

Join us for an afternoon of beautiful harp music and the natural beauty of Black Hill all around you. No need to register; just come to the Discovery Center and enjoy.

Go on a treasure hunt! People have hidden boxes with handmade stamps around the park. Stop inside the Discovery Center anytime during program hours to get an introduction to letterboxing and the tools to participate, then head out on your own for an adventure! Every letterbox has a list of clues to find it. Collect the stamps and leave your mark in the box. Registration required.
